"Secrecy is as indispensible to human beings as fire,
and as greatly feared."

Upside Down: Naughty Automata
created by Sandrine Sheon
About The Artist
Sandrine Sheon, the creator of the above work displayed, received an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and was a practicing sculptor and installation artist for many years before turning to paper-based mechanical art in 2001. Drawing heavily on a love of design, illustration, toy theater, tin toys, and the miniature, Sandrine trumpets an economy of means and an overwhelming desire to make more with less in a society glutted by plastic.
Sandrine explains, "Toys have always pretended to reflect the best and most banal societal values and mores. But it all depends who the audience is. I want to say, 'Look more closely. There's more there than meets the eye.'"
also wanted to make art that was completely affordable and required the
participation of its viewers. The World Upside Down, Sandrine's
wacky and irreverent world of gender-bending automata offers a unique space
for inversion, as well as a healthy brand of female-positive sexuality.
When not making art, Sandrine works as a graphic designer, producing print
collateral and websites. She also plays the clarinet. Mind Caviar
thinks she's just swell!
