Up! Cubano Style
by

Cubans
have historically created the finest rums in the world, and they have a
history of celebrating with song, drink and dance. What better time to
celebrate the beauty of spring than now-- Cubano style with a Cuban specialty?
A zesty Cuban Mojito will
put a spring in your step and a smile on your face. Allow the fresh mint
to tickle your senses and the light, dry rum to go to your head. Relax,
lie in the sunshine as the cool spring breezes wash your cares away. Offer
fragrant sips to your lover and think of freedom, no worries... in such
an idyllic setting sensuality will certainly be encouraged!
The illustration to the left
is a classic Bacardi Rum advertising poster from Cuba. The model, Lillo,
dressed in traditional Salsa garb, was a popular pin-up girl in the 1940s.
The Bacardi company has been producing fine rums since the 1800s. They
create many flavors of rums, including the flavored rum, Bacardi Limon.
The following recipe calls for Bacardi Carta Blanca or Bacardi Gold, however
Bacardi Limon may be substituted if you require a more citrusy flavor.
Enjoy! |
The Perfect Mojito
1½ oz Bacardi
Carta Blanca (Light-Dry) Rum or Bacardi Gold
12 fresh mint leaves, carefully
washed and stemmed
Juice of ½ Lime
1 oz Simple Syrup or 4 tsp.
granulated sugar dissolved in 1 Tbs. water
Club Soda to taste
1.
In the bottom of a tall Collins glass or a wide brandy snifter, place the
mint leaves and syrup. Crush with a wooden pestle or the handle of a wooden
spoon.
2. Add the lime juice and
rum.
3. Fill glass with crushed
ice and top with a spritz of club soda. Serves one, but please share!
This is a delicious spring
time drink. Enjoy one with your sweetheart! If rum is not your favorite
alcohol drink, you may substitute a quality vodka in place of the rum.
I suggest Absolut Vodka for a clean, crisp flavor.
The Perfect Quencher: Fresh Limeade
4 Limes at room temperture,
rolled in the palm, cut, seeded and squeezed
1 cup granulated sugar
½ gallon of spring
water or naturally effervescent mineral water
Plenty of Ice or Crushed
Ice, as needed
Lime wedges for garnish
1. Stir all ingredients
into a large half-gallon size pitcher, except the ice.
2. Pour into a tall glass
over crushed ice and enjoy!
This drink makes the perfect
quencher for cool or warm weather, either virgin or as a great mixer for
your favorite mixed drinks. Surprisingly, limeade is decidedly more grown-up
in flavor than lemonade: tart, sweet, perfect! Share it with a willing
mate on a hot day and see how things heat up between you...
