sex writer Thoughts About Sex Activism
by Jamie Joy Gatto

Of course, writing is my primary means of activism as an activist. By publishing my words and other's , I can reach audiences around the world, as well as for posterity, for the future in shaping society's views of all things sexual. By writing erotica with a plot, with substance, with meaning and emotion behind the sexual, I feel I can reach others and promote that sex is natural, healthy, and a big part of us as our human existence goes. By creating these feelings and emotions and linking them with sexual arousal, I can integrate the sexual human experience with the emotional human experience in a just few thousand, and sometimes if I'm lucky, a few hundred words. Now that's power!

I also feel that sex itself is powerful. It's a powerful force that has been mangled and tamped down, forced into destructive darkness, and exploited systematically in ways that are often always negative. I think most religions, both Western and Eastern, are frightened of the power of sex, because sex is so big, so very much, and so highly spiritual. As a matter of fact, sex is my god, my religion. Through imposing control on any congregation's sexual urges, you are controlling very nearly their every thought. What abuse of power! What trust these organizations have raped. It is a big lie that sex is a sin. My goal in life, my work in life, is to bend this misshapen attitude and to uncover and expose the truth. Sex is great, sex is good. Sex is what keeps us alive, what makes us feel whole. Sex counts, sex matters.

sex writer A Means to an End

I also write and publish sexual columns which explore society and the sexual, sexual philosophy, as well as offer gentle, informative, well-researched sex advice. So many sex advice columns make light of the reader's questions, taunting and teasing the querent, and use this form of biting humor to promote themselves and their column at the expense of the poor soul looking for answers, for real solutions. I don't find this helpful to promoting a sex-positive attitude, and I always thank my readers for having the courage to write. Yes, many questions and readers are misguided, but exploiting the reader's ignorance for entertainment value is both cruel and counter-productive to hosting such a column. I strongly disagree with that type of methodology. It promotes sexual fear and ignorance. Who wants to write in to a columnist only to be bashed? And who takes the sex advice seriously when it is rendered with such spite? Surely there's a better way, and I intend to prove it.

These columns appear quarterly both in hard copy and on-line:

  • Champagne Rouge appears quarterly in the webzine Mind Caviar. It addresses reader's questions with well-researched and compassionate sex advice.
  • Power Principles is a look at the sexual, spiritual, philosophical and practical side of BDSM. Appears quarterly in the national BDSM magazine, Prometheus.
  • Twisted Urges: Where Society and the Sexual Meet  is a sociological exploration of how American society views and treats all things sexual. It appears quarterly in the webzine suspect thoughts, and then at Erotica Reader's Association's Smutter's Lounge.
  • Ask Jamie Joy  a column for bisexuals by someone who really understands! This is a sexual question and answer forum by and for bisexuals which runs monthly at Three Pillows, the online site devoted to MMF bi sex.

sex writer Publishing Other Writers

My goal as a sex writer is also to publish other writers. I am currently working on a project (Summer 2001) which is a non-fiction anthology showcasing sex activists and sex-positive people called Celebrate Sex! Sex Positive Speak Out. I am editing additional erotica anthologies, as well. My biggest project is Mind Caviar, which is meant to be erotica for intelligent readers. This project is a sex-positive webzine which is published quarterly and requires a great deal of work and tremendous amount of time at little or no profit to me. By creating Mind Caviar, I have met with and have been in touch with some of the most important and influential writers in erotica today, as well as many sex-positive people and especially the readers. Yes, it is primarily for entertainment, but it is also meant to reach out to the world as a sex-positive influence. The Internet amazes me in its capacity to reach so many people. That is why I publish online as well as in print.

sex writer Thoughts About Bisexual Activism
by Jamie Joy Gatto

Since I do not have the pleasure of having my own bi community or bisexual support group in New Orleans, I have built and joined communities on-line to find a sense of support and community. I have also traveled on several occasions over the last two years-- eight hours or more of travel and on my own dime to attend BiNet events where I taught workshops as an unpaid volunteer in order to do my work as both a sex activist and a bisexual activist. I will continue to do so at every opportunity. I love the BiNet Houston and BiNet Austin people, and I will do anything I can to support them. The workshops I hosted were two: "Getting in Touch with your Erotic Self" and "Guided Erotic Meditation." Notice the emphasis on erotic. That's what I do as an activist. I help people to reach their sexual selves and to nurture it, celebrate it. If anyone happens to get hot and horny along the way, so be it. We are all sexual creatures, and I'm here to both exploit and defend that stance. Hot and horny is a good thing.

sex writer My Favorite Kind of Queer

While I personally identify as bisexual, and so does my husband, I prefer to have relationships with men who are bisexual. My favorite kind of sex, and sexual relationship is with two bisexual men. I am currently seeking a closed, long-term triad relationship. Call me kinky, call me queer. Yes I am.

sex writerA Bi-Friendly Place
Your Free Bisexuality Resource Center

I am founder, designer and Hostess for this educational and sexy on-line resource, since 1999.  It was originally hosted at the free host Angelfire, but was destroyed by them after being considered "too adult " even though pornographic photos were not posted. I then moved the site to Mind Caviar, my own domain name where I still regularly update the site. A lot of cross-over readership occurs as Bi-Friendly is a part of the bigger webzine, Mind Caviar, as well as its own zine. My hope is to draw attention to, exploit and promote the label "bisexual" as it will hopefully create greater acceptance by both the homosexual and heterosexual communities.

I collect and write bisexual articles, poetry, erotica and host a free, bisexual discussion and e-mail news group. The site is a haven for bisexuals, meant to be informative, to answer questions for those people who may be questioning their sexuality, as well as entertaining. One of the unique portions of Bi-Friendly are the Bi Personalities: interviews with bi activists and other sex positive people such as artists, and musicians. I also include erotica geared towards bi people. A Bi-Friendly Place does not intend to segregate sexuality from bisexuality, but realizes that sex is joyous, sacred, and a natural part of our lives. So many bi groups tend to be afraid of sex, hoping to squelch the swinger stereotype of bis. I find this unfortunate, misleading, and hope to celebrate sex at Bi-Friendly, not exclude it.

sex writerA Bi-Friendly Place Newsgroup
Your Free Bisexuality Discussion Group

Founded in 1999 as a means of reaching out to other bisexuals, my intention was to try to meet other like-minded people. Boy did I! The list has grown to an international membership of nearly 300 people from the US, UK, Australia, and Canada. Anyone over 17 can join, and all topics are fine. We encourage diversity and we also encourage networking. Yes, you may post a single personal ad or a single business ad on the list, but don't SPAM us with it. No, you may not post XXX pictures on the group home website. It's really a great list, a bit quiet, but I have found peace in knowing that there are so many others who are also looking to connect and share stories, questions and ideas. You are welcome to join us!

Sexuality Workshops
Hosted and Created by Jamie Joy Gatto

sex writer Sexuality Workshop
Getting in Touch with Your Erotic Self, Part One

I set out to explore what makes people experience the erotic. Was it sight, sound, scent, thought, memory,  preconceptions, self-esteem, all of the above? Of course the answer is all of the above, and more, but I have turned a workshop into an experience that transcends the normal sexual experience, and causes the participant to go deeper within the self to find the inner erotic. The answer lies in sensory deprivation and mental engagement. By hiding sight, confusing the senses, one is forced to look inside for the experience. In this workshop partners are paired up to join together as a means of  sexual self-discovery. No actual intercourse, no overt sex play or penetration is required. The mind and all of the senses are fully engaged. One comes away feeling pampered, satiated, and comfortable in one's own sexual skin.

Jamie Joy has performed this workshop in her hometown of New Orleans, as well as traveled to Texas to offer it. If you are interested in learning more about this workshop, or in scheduling Jamie Joy to host it, please contact Jamie Joy Gatto. She offers this workshop free to non-profit groups who promote a sex-positive atmosphere and cannot afford payment. Please inquire if interested.

Getting in Touch with Your Erotic Self, Part Two

I have assembled a series of activities meant to create sexual self-esteem, with a focus on the sexual self rather than on sexual relationships. By exploring common misconceptions of what makes a person sexy, I offer a look at how society sees us as a sexual person, then reverse these ideas to increase sexual self-awareness and positive attitude. Through select erotic and sexual philosophy readings, guided visualizations and meditations, and personal creative writing, each participant comes closer to his/her own truth.  The truth and ideas discovered are shared with the class as a part of the process. I also use affirmation cards to increase sexual self-esteem. This class is touching, informative and uplifting.

Guided Erotic Meditation

Borrowing from sexual luminary Nancy Ava Miller, who created the BDSM support group People Exchanging Power, I have created a guided erotic meditation that allows participants to completely relax while finding their sexual self. The focus is on physical sensation, awareness of the body, the sexual body and mind combined, exploring emotions, sexual memories, and looking toward our sexual future. It also creates and allows a safe haven to explore sexual taboos so that we may become more familiar with our sexual selves, and to discover our dark sexual corners that we tend to keep out of mind. Participants come away feeling refreshed both in body and mind.

BDSM For Beginners

Many sexually creative folks are interested in exploring the realms of Bondage & Domination, Sado-Masochism and sexual role-playing, however they feel a bit daunted by setting out to play for the first time on their own. Intimidation is cast aside as we explore what SM is, and what it isn't, busting myths, who plays and how. This class is a question and answer forum as well as an  interactive class that involves discussion and philosophy with a little bit of how-to added in the mix. This class is geared strictly toward the novice, and it is not geared toward detailed, instructional BDSM play. It is more about the philosophy behind the practices, mental safety, the use of safewords, medical and physical safety tips, and to encourage sexual self-awareness. This class is well-suited for those curious in learning more about BDSM, and for those who are just beginning to play. It is also well-suited for friends and family of BSDM players who wish to learn about the practices and philosophy of BDSM.

sex writer Erotica Writing Fast Fiction Workshop
For Beginners and Pros, Alike!

Jamie Joy is developing a fast fiction erotica writing workshop for those interested in exploring their sexuality through creative writing. The classes are interactive, supportive of both the novice and the well-seasoned writer. Participants  will write a piece to share with the class (if they wish) each session. There will be take away lessons that the writer can use to develop their writing skills at home, as well. People who partcipate will feel a sense of accomplishment, a connection to their sexual self, and the immediate gratification of writing something that very same session.

If you are in the New Orleans area, or if  you are interested in learning more about this workshop, or in scheduling Jamie Joy to host it, please contact Jamie Joy Gatto.
