"There is in every madman a misunderstood genius whose
idea, shining in his head,
frightened people, and for whom delirium was the only solution
to the strangulation that life had prepared for him.

Surreal Pop Artist
The first thing you may notice about Hoglund's work is the simplicity of it, yet if you dig a little deeper, it starts to get complicated. The images stick with you, they mutate, they grow in your mind. Why? Kris Hoglund has an explanation: his work is done on a subconscious level, so therefore it speaks to the subconscious mind.
Hoglund began his surreal pop art art as an adult, unknowingly at the time, in an effort to deal with the extreme loss he suffered after childhood trauma: Kris' father, diagnosed as a schizophrenic, took Kris' mother's life in their own home when Kris was just nine years old.
His erotic work, featured in this issue's gallery is born from internet porn and the mind of an artist struggling with his subconscious desires. Most of the images here are exclusively created for Mind Caviar.

About The Artist
Kris Hoglund is a Seattle-based artist who is married with children. His graphic art work is primarily made from manipulations of internet pornography and celebrity photos with AdobePhotoDeluxe. He's also taken some shots of his wife, but is sworn to secrecy as to which ones they are. In addition to smut manipulations, he paints Surreal Pop Art. Some of his artistic influences are Keith Haring and Vincent Van Gogh.
When asked about net porn he has a lot to say:
"Let's face it, porn surfing is a pretty isolating activity for most people, certainly for me... I'm noticing that my art reflects all the different ways in which I hide out from the world. Getting too close to people is really quite scary to me... it's very real, and I think a lot of people share in that."
"It's interesting when you start to analyze what turns you on (ie: what you look at) in terms of its symbolic significance to your own life. I don't expect that a lot of porn surfers are doing that, but it's still interesting how it all works. We're wired for sex and I think we develop our preferences at a pretty early age."
Quotes From The Artist
"I call my art 'Surreal
Pop Art' because I am driven to put the familiar images of my subconscious
down on paper/canvas and interpret the meaning they have for me. The ones
that mean the most to me personally, generally don't connect with others
unless they have had very similar life experiences, while the ones that speak of more general ideas tend to be more accessible.
"I've sort of reintegrated myself and am actually enjoying my life, doing the things I want to do and eliminating the things that were keeping me miserable. My painting is not as intense, but I still do a lot of it. I am exploring myself in a different light now and I really don't know where I'm going with it, I'm just going with it."
