Watching
The woman who lives on the
other side of the alley has sheers on her windows. Her bedroom
is right across from mine, and if I'm there at the right time,
I can watch her undress. I can't be certain that she knows I watch, but I'm assuming
she knows one can see through her curtains. I don't see her every night, maybe once or twice a month. Sometimes I look for her and sometimes I don't. It depends
on what's going on in my life. But when I do see her, it's arresting.
It's the simple, everyday things that get to me, like watching
her take her earrings out. Her underwear isn't extraordinary, and she wears the sort of
cotton nightdresses that have cartoon characters on them. But
the very ordinariness of it makes me hopelessly hard. This isn't
a show. This is an ordinary woman getting ready for bed behind
a flutter of illusion. Last night she brought a man home with her. I had never seen
her do this before, although I'd often wondered when I was alone,
if she was alone. Last night, she was not. He was tall and wiry but solid, not skinny. I expected her
to turn off her light, but she didn't. In fact, she stopped him
when he tried to do so, whispered in his ear, then kissed him,
running her hands over his chest. I practically doubled over with
envy and longing. I watched as he took off everything I had seen her take off,
kissed all the places I had thought about kissing. I watched as he lay on his back and pulled her onto him and
she rode him, slowly, then faster, as he held her hips. It seemed
to last forever. Only after all three of came did she turn out her light. Copyright
